One day in May

I'm doing design/planning on a house in my usual neighborhood. The old house is a tear down and the new one will be the guest house of the adjacent property. I'm hoping to get it sited and graded so that the two parcels feel like one place. I met with the builder of the new house. He seemed very interested and helpful. This is a view of the house to be demoed, from the adjacent property, and the other way. I've cleared a lot of the understory in the second shot. jc

Filigree Lace

This is a red filigree laceleaf Japanese maple at PBV. It's about six feet tall. This is quite an old tree. I built this garden about 15 years ago, and the tree was already mature. Because the leaves are so fine it grows very slowly. It looks fairly standard in the photo but the leaves are truly about as delicate as lace. I've pruned it to give it some shape. Behind it is a piece of rose quartz with mica. It doesn't look too pink between the azalea and the maple, but it is quite striking when the sun reflects off the mica cap. It is directly in front of you when you turn into the entrance. Makes a nice opening statement I think. jc

Early flowering circles

In the sculpture garden I have iris cristata flowering. The circle also shows some ferns and dwarf hosta. The iris have spread a lot and I will remove some after flowering. In the circle with the birch I have sea thrift and perennial verbena. The verbena don't necessarily survive the winter, but here they have flourished and are seeding themselves. jc

Another day at PBV

I spent the day working on a garden stone path, but these are nicer photos.
This is another example of how I like to make gravel driveways and parking areas part of the composition. This is a parking area at Pleasant Bay Village. You can see the sign for room 403. The gravel feels like a big pond washing up to the stone banks of the gardens.
The other photo is just pretty. I'm not a fan of this cherry (sort of messy and fragile) except when it makes the pink snow. jc

Jonah's Falls

Just brilliant colors today. The Cape Cod light. The sky was bluer than shows I think. They added that bench since I last posted a photo of this work. Need to clear some of the groundcover from the patio. The stone pattern is quite pretty. I take pride in the composition of the irregular patio stones. jc

May 1

Actually, April 30th, as I was away May 1st and couldn't get photos. The place is coming alive. June 1st, flowers everywhere. jc
